Not So Seamless Interface

I want to know the source of an event.  How did this situation come about?  Unfortunately, I have a tendency to give this more consideration when things aren’t going as I would like.  What caused this to happen?  It could be a glitch in a computer system, a despairing relationship, or a shattering world event.

If you consider the craft of sewing and bringing two pieces of cloth together, the thread that makes the seam can be visible, though not always.  The finished product is seen as one piece, or one garment.  The same applies to an event.  It appears as one event, but it is actually stitched together by many different factions.

According to WhatIs.com in the tech world, “a seamless interface is the joining of two computer programs so that they appear to be one program with a single user interface.”  Simple enough.  The definition continues, “it conceals the fact that what is behind the interface are a number of different programs written in different languages, at different times, and by different developers.”  The last part of the definition is particularly intriguing to me, “with
programming distributed among different computers in a network, it becomes important to screen the user from the location of the logic and the data behind the user interface.”

Exactly!  Different languages, different times, different developers, and screened from the location of the logic and the data! How can you begin to understand how an event comes together, or falls apart, if you screen yourself from the information?

As an analogy for exploring personal experience, consider the computer referenced in the definition as a symbol for an individual - you.  The different languages and times would be within your experience.  Words have different meanings as you gain life experience. For example, you understand the concept of discipline today differently than when you were a child.  Dreams and imagination are a kind of inner language.  Some dreams have more impact than actual physical experience.  The programs would represent your beliefs.  The developers would include you and those with whom you interact.

In exploring why a business transaction fell through, I scrutinized my actions. There was nothing I had done that would have been considered counterproductive.  It appeared to be a perfect fit for the client.  I had gone the extra mile and sacrificed time that I normally had spent for another project, not to mention my personal time.  Ah ha, there it was – sacrifice.  The word I had mentally spoken during my inner exploration caught my attention.  I found that I was not in alignment with my current ideals and had let a past program (belief) impede my progress.   It was not responsible for the event, but the discovery led me to better understand the situation and to go forward with more clarity.

The more clearly each intent is stated, the stronger the thread that secures the fabric of an event.  In many cases, it’s important to see the stitches and to know the underlining factions.  Although, I sense under the surface of events there are endless patterns of connectivity and creativity - seamless and supportive.
